March 5, 2008
The Ottawa Rowing Club has named Siobhan McLaughlin as its new Head Coach effective April 2008.
Siobhan is currently the provincial Executive Director and Head Coach for the Saskatchewan Rowing Association, and chair of Rowing Canada’s Interprovincial Coaches Committee, is the second full-time head coach in the ORC’s 140-year history. She succeeds Lubo Kisiov who left last October after seven years to become Head Coach at the Thames Boat Club in London, England.
“I'm very excited about the opportunity to be joining the ORC as the Head Coach,” she said from Saskatoon. “The ORC has a great tradition and reputation in the rowing community, and I'm really looking forward to meeting all of the athletes, coaches and volunteers that make up the membership.”
A native of St. Catharines, Ont., Siobhan attended, rowed and coached at Ridley College before going to UWO as an undergrad where she was a member the Western Mustangs Varsity Women’s crew from 1996-2000. She has completed Level 3 of the National Coaching Certification Program and is close to completing Level 4 as well as being a certified kinesiologist.

Her research has also been featured online as a Young Innovator --http://www.innovationcanada.ca/11/en/articles/younginnovator.html .

2007 Wes Kuran Scholarship Award – Jamie Bell
February 19, 2008
Jamie Bell is the first winner of the Wes Kuran Scholarship Award, which includes a $500 award to support full time studies.
Jamie started her rowing career two years ago with the Ottawa Rowing Club’s Adult Learn to Row program. That fall she joined the University of Ottawa novice rowing team, and has continued on to row two seasons with the Ottawa Rowing Club and the University of Ottawa Varsity team.
As well as being a full-time theatre student at the University of Ottawa, working at Montana’s Cookhouse, and volunteering across Ottawa, she lives, eats, and breathes rowing. She is constantly pushing herself to get fitter, to train harder, and to be a role model for the rest of the University of Ottawa Team. As the team co-ordinator, she keeps others students motivated to do their best, all while competing and coordinating the team administration.
Jamie says that through rowing, she has learned so much about herself; it has helped her improve her fitness, my focus, and my determination. Through the journey, she recognizes that she has been supported by a community of friends and fellow rowers. Her bond to the sport and the club has grown so strong that she finds herself contributing more time and effort, continuing with the sport and the lifestyle of rowing because she feels that it is an amazing sport, both competitively and recreationally.
We congratulate Jamie and look forward to many seasons to come, wishing her success in the future both on and off the water.
