Disappearing docks

May 19, 2013

The docks stolen on May 18

Some time between yesterday morning and 10 pm Saturday night three sections of our docks have disappeared - in the photo they are section 11 and the two new sections closest to Macdonald Cartier bridge.

Either the connection broke and they drifted down river or they were stolen. A coach boat checked both shores of the Ottawa river this morning down past the island (although not really up the Gatineau) but did not find anything. We have also notified the Ottawa and Gatineau police.

If anyone noticed anything in the last day or so please let the club know - clubmanager@ottawarowingclub.com.

Voting for athlete representative on the club executive

May 17, 2013

Each season, rowers registered with a competitive program vote to elect their Athlete Representative.

Any competitive athlete, aged 18 years or older, can be elected to the position of Athlete Rep for a one-year term.  As an Officer of the Ottawa Rowing Club and member of the Executive Committee, the Rep brings the voice of athletes to all discussions and reflects them when voting on motions before the Executive.  The Rep is expected to attend all Executive meetings, generally every two weeks, as well as the Annual General Meeting of the membership.

Andrew Todd has held the position of Athlete Rep for two consecutive terms.  This reflects the high esteem in which he is held by his fellow athletes.  He has been an advocate on all issues concerning competitive rowing.  Andrew has been a champion of good sportsmanship and has worked with the program captains to develop the ORC ‘Code of Conduct’ which will be launched at an upcoming rowing meeting.  On behalf of the Executive Committee and ORC rowers, coaches, volunteers, and employees, I thank Andrew for his contribution to the growth, development and improvement of rowing at the ORC.

Nominations:  A candidate for Athlete Rep can be nominated by emailing  Alanna Schram   at schramer9@hotmail.com  no later than Wednesday May 22, 2013.  A reminder that the candidate must 18 years or older.

Elections:  The list of candidates will be posted at the ORC office and on ottawarowingclub.com on Thursday May 23, 2013.

Voting will be done by ballot in the ORC ofice on Friday May 24 and Saturday 25 – during club hours.  In the event that there is only one candidate nominated, they will be acclaimed to the position.

Results:  Results of the Athlete Rep election will be posted on the ORC website before Monday May 27 2013.

Thank you,
Lana Burpee
President

Executive Director

May 16, 2013

May 12 2013

It is with regret that we have accepted the resignation of Laryssa Biesenthal from the position of Executive Director of the Ottawa Rowing Club.

After a short time in this newly created position, Laryssa recognized that it was a poor fit and will now enjoy her young family as they adjust to Ottawa following their life in Australia.  Laryssa and her husband plan to be active participants in the rowing community, and we hope to deploy her talents on specific projects in the future.

The ORC Executive believes that an Executive Director is needed to provide dedicated management of the competitive, recreational and instruction programs.  A candidate search will be undertaken over the next months.

Registrations to date are lower than expected in many areas – largely we believe for weather reasons and those identified at the Annual General Meeting.  Therefore, the Executive is taking a cautious approach to expenditures including salaries for new employees.  Administrative support will be provided by Fiona Mclean and Erinn Mistak with the help of the volunteers of the Executive.  Brian Adams, with the help of Alex Fels, continue to manage the facilities and equipment that we rely on for the daily operation of club members.

Andrew Todd

May 12, 2013

Many of you may know that while out bike riding with fellow athletes at the London Training Centre Fridat Andre Todd was hit by a bus and suffered serious injuries.

He is now out of his second surgery and Jenna and his parents are with him. Today he underwent surgery to repair his knee. Additional injuries include a pelvic fracture and more surgery is scheduled.

The good news is that Andrew is in good spirits. He has no head or spinal injuries. And of course, being alive after being hit by and trapped under a bus is a blessing. The doctors are aware that Andrew is an elite athlete and feel that he will be able to make a full recovery and successfully return to high performance rowing.

It sounds as if Andrew will be in Victoria hospital in London for the coming week. It is unclear about where the remainder of his convalescence will be.

The club sends itsthoughts and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Updates on Andrew's progress will be on the ORC Facebook page.

The purchase of the new dock system was made possible by a $75,000 grant the club received this winter from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

A key criteria for the grant is to make the docks accessible for adaptive rowers as part of a commitment by the club to increase the size of the ORC's adaptive rowing program.

We will hold an official christening of the docks and thanks to the OTF as part of the National Capital High School Regatta on May 25.

Shoreline clean-up day - June 9, 2013

April 21, 2013

On June 9th, we are organizing a shoreline clean-up along the River for the ORC and a number of other river inhabitants. It looks like it's going to be an absolutely huge event with participants from Mill Street, the Museum of civilization, the War Museum and others.

This will requre lots of organizing leading up to the event and on the day itself. If you are interested in getting involved, please send me an email with information on when you are able to help out (in advance of the event or on the day of the event itself) and any information on ways in which you think you could volunteer your time. I could really use the help!!

! Also, if you know of any organizations that might like to get involved (with volunteers, or could contribute prizes, grub, supplies for our clean-upetc.), please let me know and we'll see if we can get them involved.

Thanks so much!

Jill Webster
