2008 Summer Junior Programs

May 23, 2008

Junior Competitive – This program is structured for junior athletes who have rowed for a minimum of one high school season and can commit to the training and competition schedules involved in a competitive summer club program.  There will be twice daily practices (mornings and afternoons).  Typically the morning practices will be ‘pieces’ (harder workouts) and the afternoons will be shorter, technical rows.  Athletes will have an opportunity to train and race in both sculling and sweeping events.  The main competitive focus will be on the ERA Championships (July 5), Ontario Rowing Championships (July 25-27) and the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta (August 5-10).  Exceptional junior crews will be considered to attend the US National Rowing Championships (July 16-20).

Junior Development – This program is designed to work on skill development in both sculling and sweeping boats, as well as increasing fitness.  Athletes would be expected to attend four to five practices per week, and have the option of participating in the Ottawa Recreational Regatta (July 19).  Development athletes will have the opportunity to join the competitive program in September for the fall racing season if they choose.

Competitive athlete fees are $590 for the summer and $800 for the full year.  Athletes who rowed with their high school and paid the $250 high school fee can register by June 1st to pay $550 for a full year membership.  Competitive fees cover boat transportation and entry fees to all regattas, with the exception of Henley in which athletes are responsible for their own transportation to the event and for covering their own entry fees based on the number of events they are racing in.

Development athlete fees are $515 for the year.  High school athletes who register by June 1st can pay $265.

First athletes and coaches meeting will be on Saturday June 7th at 10:00am at the Ottawa Rowing Club.
